THEMES
01
Self-expression
Youths can discover their identities through speaking up or writing.
Diary and/or journal writing is where this self-expression begins, but over time, with the integration of digital media like social media platforms and blogs, youths are able to use visuals to aid their thoughts.
The way in which adolescents express themselves has changed over the course of time but has the motive remained the same?
02
Adults as obstacles to free expression
Adults -- parents and teachers -- are suspicious of teens having agency and autonomy. They assume the didactic role in the adult-youth relationship.
The traditional obstacle: adults decide what youth can read and learn. Adults assume ownership over how adolescents should behave.
vs.
The modern obstacle: adults perceive adolescents as vain due to digital socialization and thus, do not take them seriously. Adults want to maintain control over adolescent's lives.
03
Confidence and education of others through self-expression
Traditional diary: adolescents' expressions of their innermost thoughts and emotions become published, yet publication is not their motivation.
vs.
Modern diary: use of digital comes with the expectation that content is public, which may change the way adolescents portray their thoughts.
